The exceptional career of Philippe Entremont began at the
age of eighteen when he came to international attention by having a great
success in New York’s Carnegie Hall playing Jolivet’s piano concerto and
Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1. Since then, he has pursued a top international
career as a pianist, ands for the last 30 years, on the podium as well.
His renown as an orchestral conductor and his dedication to developing
orchestras’ artistic potential have led to numerous international tours,
playing before full houses: ten tours in the US and seven in Japan with the
Vienna Chamber Orchestra, a tour of eleven concerts with the Orquestra de
Cadaqués in capitals of countries in Asia, and a tour in Switzerland and
Germaning conducting the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra. As principal
Guest Conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra, he
has led tours internationally, including the US in 2005 and 2006, conducting
from the piano as well as the podium. He returned in both capacities for the
Munich Symphony’s highly successful 15-concert US tour in February of 2009.
In 1997, Philippe Entremont founded the biennial Santo Domingo Music
Festival, of which he is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Festival
Orchestra. The Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007 with a
special concert series featuring the premieres of two Festival-commissioned
symphonies by Dominican composers, and performances by internationally
renowned guest artists such as André Watts, Dan Zhu, Arturo Sandoval and
Vitalij Kowaljow. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquestra de
Cadaqués. In 2006, in connection with the “Mozart Year”, he conducted the
Tokyo-based Super World Orchestra. Philippe Entremont was also among the 10
world-class pianists chosen to perform in the “Piano Extravaganza of the
Century” at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Mr. Entremont was Music Director of the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra
between 1981 and 1986, after which he became Music Director of the Denver
Symphony. He was also Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra
until 2002. After having served as Music Director and Chief Director of the
Vienna Chamber Orchestra for almost thirty years, he is now Conductor
Laureate for Life. He was also Music Director of the Israel Chamber
Orchestra and is now their Conductor Laureate.
Philippe Entremont has directed the greatest symphony orchestras of Europe,
Asia and America: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Detroit, Minnesota, Seattle,
St. Louis, Houston, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Montreal, The Academy of
Saint Martin in the Fields, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquestra
Nacional de España, the Academy of Santa Cecilia of Rome, l’Orchestre
National de France, the orchestras of Göteberg, Stockholm, Oslo and Warsaw,
the NHK of Tokyo, the KBS Orchestra of Seoul, the Vienna Symphony and the
Philharmonic Orchestra of Bergen, to name a few. He has worked with the
world greatest soloists, both instrumental and vocal.
One of the most recorded artists of all time, Philippe Entremont has
appeared on many labels, including CBS Sony, Teldec and Harmonia Mundi, and
he has garnered all of the prizes and awards in the industry. His 2008
releases include Mozart’s Concertone; Concerto for Violin and Piano with the
Wiener Kammerorchester; Strauss’ lieder with Sophie Koch (mezzo-soprano),
and Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No.2 with the Orquestra del Festival Musical de
Santa Domingo.
Officer of the French Legion of Honor, Commander of the Order of Merit,
Commander of the Order of Arts et Lettres, Philippe Entremont has also been
awarded the Arts and Sciences Cross of Honor of Austria. He is President of
the International Certificate for Piano Artists, President of the Bel’Arte
Foundation of Brussels and is Director of the famed American Conservatory of
Fontainebleau, a post formerly held by the legendary Nadia Boulanger.
La carrière exceptionnelle de Philippe Entremont a
débuté à l’âge de 18 ans lorsqu’il s’est fait connaître du public
international en interprétant de façon magistrale le concerto pour piano
de Jolivet et le concerto pour piano No.1 de Liszt à Carnegie Hall à New
York. Depuis lors, il poursuit une carrière internationale de tout premier
ordre, au piano, puis, depuis trente ans, sur le podium.
Philippe Entremont a dirigé les plus grands orchestres
symphoniques américains, européens et asiatiques : Philadelphie, San

di Santa Cecilia de Rome, l’Orchestre National de France, les orchestres
symphoniques et philharmoniques de Göteborg, Stockholm, Oslo, Varsovie, le
NHK de Tokyo, l’Orchestre KBS de Seoul, l’Orchestre Symphonique de
Vienne et l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Bergen, pour n’en citer que
quelques-uns. Il a travaillé avec les plus grands solistes internationaux,
instrumentistes et chanteurs.
Il a été directeur musical de l’Orchestre
Philharmonique de la Nouvelle Orleans entre 1981 et 1986, puis directeur
musical de l’Orchestre Symphonique du Colorado à Denver. Il a aussi été
chef permanent de l’Orchestre de Chambre d’Amsterdam jusqu’en 2002.
Après avoir été le directeur musical et le chef permanent de l’Orchestre
de Chambre de Vienne, il en est devenu le chef lauréat à vie (« Lebenzeit
»). Il a également été le directeur musical de l’Orchestre de Chambre
d’Israël et en est aujourd’hui leur chef lauréat.
En 1997, il a fondé le Festival bisannuel de Santo
Domingo, dont il est le directeur artistique et chef d’orchestre de l’orchestre
du festival. En octobre 2004 Philippe Entremont est nommé principal chef
invité de l’Orchestre Symphonique de Munich qu’il dirige en Allemagne
et en tournées internationales, puis en 2006 principal chef. Il est
également principal chef invité de l’Orchestre de Cadaquès. En juillet
2004 il dirige les premiers concerts du nouvel orchestre européen « Spirit
of Europe », basé en Autriche, formé de musiciens de tous les pays d’Europe.
En 2006, en connection avec « l’année Mozart », il sera le chef annuel
attitré du Super World Orchestra basé à Tokyo.
Sa renommée de bâtisseur d’orchestres et son
expérience du travail dans la durée pour le développement du potentiel
artistique des orchestres lui ont valu de nombreuses tournées
internationales, devant des salles combles : dix tournées aux Etats-Unis,
sept au Japon avec l’Orchestre de Chambre de Vienne, une tournée de onze
concerts à la tête de l’Orchestre de Cadaquès dans les capitales
asiatiques, de même qu’une tournée récente en Suisse et en Allemagne
avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg. A la tête de l’Orchestre
Symphonique de Munich, il dirigera du clavier 11 concerts en Espagne en mai
2005, 28 concerts aux USA en octobre 2005 et 15 concerts au Royaume-Uni en
novembre 2006.
Un des artistes les plus enregistrés de tous les temps,
Philippe Entremont a été publié par de nombreux labels, notamment par
CBS, Sony, Teldec et Harmonia Mundi, et a été salué par tous les plus
grands prix de l’industrie du disque. Le label suisse Cascavelle a
récemment publié son intégrale des œuvres pour piano seul et à quatre
mains de Ravel, ainsi que son enregistrement inédit du premier concerto
pour piano de Tchaïkovsky, réalisé en 1958 avec le London Symphony
Orchestra sous la direction de Pierre Monteux. Pour le même label Philippe
Entremont a enregistré deux concertos de Mozart, à la direction et au
piano, avec l’Orchestre Symphonique de Munich. En 2006-2007, Philippe
Entremont se produira également en Suisse, en Allemagne, en France, en
Russie et en Chine.
Officier de la Légion d’honneur, Commandeur de l’Ordre
du Mérite, Commandeur des Arts et Lettres, Philippe Entremont a aussi été
décoré de la Croix d’Honneur des Arts et Sciences en Autriche. Il est
Président de la Fondation Bel’Arte de Bruxelles. Il est directeur du
célèbre Conservatoire Américain de Fontainebleau, poste jadis occupé par
la légendaire Nadia Boulanger.
